What Works

When disaster strikes - be it natural or man-made - there’s rarely time to focus on your fundraising strategy.

Rapid Response Tips

The long term success of your fundraising program counts on taking these spontaneous donors and turning them into committed supporters.

  • On your thank you page ask supporters how often they’d like to receive updates on your work and how you’ve helped those impacted by the disaster. For some supporters it will be daily and for others less frequent. Ensure you can support the frequencies of communication you offer.
  • Share the stories of those who have been helped in the aftermath of the disaster - everyone likes to hear the end of the story
  • Set up a communicationseries especially for these donors that builds a bridge from your disaster work to your larger mission so the donors learn about your organization. Take advantage of any automation your online communications tools offer such as automated send and personalized content for specific giving levels.
  • Create a segmentof these donors for future communications. Thank them for their support in upcoming communications and remember that providing support through your organization in a time of special need is what brought them to you.
  • Remember this one thing...this crisis will pass and the question you’ll ask yourself is how to convert these one time donors to long term donors. The key is simple: interests. Ask as many questions as you can as to what interests your donors and segment by interests. The more you can segment your post-crisis communication, the higher your one-time donor to long-term donor conversion success will be.
